Farm_Stay

This is the accommodation we stayed in, basic but spacious. There's a large library of videos, books and old issues of astro magazines (from the late 1980s onwards). These old magazines were absolutely fascinating. Zane is an accomplished astrophotographer and I even came across some of his images in an old issue of "Sky & Space". Rabbits and kangaroos can be seen running/hopping around at dusk. Ever wondered where they hide during the day?! One evening I decided to check out photographically just how dark that impressively dark, transparent sky was. Came out at Visual Limiting Magnitude 6+ (12 minutes to mid-histogram at f4 and ISO 800 or Mag 21.1/sq arc-sec), as dark as I had ever come across anywhere up to that time. Since then I have been to high altitude sites that pushed things to Mag 21.5/sq arc-sec. Zane's Magellan Observatory and Farm Stay unfortunately shut down as a business a few years later; so no longer available for tourists.

Added May 2012: "Magellan Observatory and Rural Retreat" seems to have reopened. Go before Zane changes his mind and closes it again for visitors... To check status click: http://www.magellanobservatory.com.au/index.html
