Hala tree in the tropical wind

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

(Condensed from this Coffee Times article): The hala tree, or pandanus (Pandanus tectorius), is native to the Hawaiian and Pacific islands. It was
essential to the Hawaiian culture, for example for making lei from the keys of its pineapple-like fruit. It is said that the lei brings
wisdom, and that the pollen of the male flower, stirred in a woman's food, makes for a passionate night.

The hala tree is best known for the ancient and sophisticated craft of lauhala weaving (lau means leaf). In the old days, lauhala
was used for canoe sails, wall thatch, window-shutters, roof lining, and mats.
