We spent a day in Kavala on the mainland. I still had excursion credit so took a chance on liking a half day excursion outside in the country. It wasn't the best excursion, but it wasn't bad either. We were taken to Xanthi, a melting pot city with varied architecture in the Eastern Thrace/Macedonia area of Greece. On the way we stopped in the Nestos river valley, which had no birds in sight (sigh) but at least was a peaceful spot for a short nature walk. We had snacks (not well cooked ones, but at least snacks!) at a restaurant. I ended up at a table with 1 Brazilian young woman who spoke NO English (kudos to her for going on the cruise!), 1 Aussie, 1 New Zealander, and 2 Hong Kong citizens. The Aussie brought up a politician and 4 of the 5 people expressed sympathy while the Brazilian looked clueless as she gamely tried to fit into the group while awaiting delivery of the "mezes." Back in Kavala, I walked quite a few blocks to board a little road sightseeing "train" around the city. I wanted a good view of Kavala's long, beautiful, aqueduct. But the train wasn't running that afternoon, so I pivoted to plan B. The chubby, modest but at least authentic lighthouse at the end of the peninsula was calling to me. I got to add +1 to my count. By then I was pretty tired but I made it back to the port. And I DID enjoy my adventures in Kavala & a small part of Macedonia.
