Fethiye, Turkey May 11, 2026

On to Turkiye! Oceania has great itineraries, and both Howard & I were really looking forward to our first stop, Fethiye. Not far from there is the large ghost town of Kayakoy with nothing but about 500 ruined stone buildings.

Kayaköy was once home to around 10,000 people, including Anatolian Muslims and Greek Orthodox Christians, within a thriving and harmonious community. With origins in the 14th century, Kayaköy was forcefully abandoned at the end of the Greco-Turkish War when a population exchange meant that Muslims and Christians were exchanged between Greece and Turkey so that each country could claim one major religion. Howard and I decided we had to see this unusual site. We took Oceania's excursion, as it made things easy in a port where there are not tons of choices about tours and transportation.

Path was rough and slippery so Howard didn't go up the whole way. But he got a good overview.
