I discovered this black bear lurking near the road in plain view when I bicycled past. I stopped and managed to get a decent photo. Not being used to having wild bears around me I was a bit uneasy but the bear seemed more interested in the wild flowers than in me, although it did occasionally look in my direction. After having observed the bear for a while I decided to just continue quietly just in case, since after all if the bear decided to approach me I would not have been able to outpace it on a loaded bicycle in the hilly terrain (Bears can run surprisingly fast, up to 50 Kph/30 Mph).
The Haines highway is a very scenic route and provides many beautiful panoramic views. Especially remarkable is the passage over and near the highest point of the road and the Three Guardsmen Mountain.
The Haines Highway connects Haines in Alaska with Haines Junction in the Yukon Territory, passing through the province of British Columbia. For the first 180km (110 miles) from Haines it follows the route of the old Dalton Trail and the total length of the highway is 244 km (152 miles) long.
