The Old Normal

Once in a while I feel nostalgic and I pull out my Nikon FM2 with its mechanical
shutter and my favorite Nikkor 24mm F2.4 lens. I bought it during my early lean years of university and
I was on top of the world. I pulled it out last summer and decided it would be worthy to document our
yearly family BBQ gathering on film. The feel of the camera with the mechanical click of the shutter and the
turn of the manual focus ring was a very satisfying sensation. The feeling didn’t last long when I
realized I had spent a total of over $45 on film and processing for 36 shots.

Ah yes, good old film. Nice in many ways but indeed, 36 exposures are done in a blink. Cool shot. I still have my Canon AE1 with a few lenses. VV

A wonderful still life! One of the aspects of the film days I don't miss at all.

Wow, expensive! Looks like you got lots of great shots though.

Ah the high price of nostalgia. But I'm betting the pics were worth it.

Nice shot with the photos as a background. Nice that you still have and use your old camera and lens. "V"

You have made such a marvelous image here...I love it!
Economic reality ran head on into nostalgia. I understand.

A lot more skill was required in those days compared to todays equipment that can almost shoot without human intervention. V

Fondly remember my f 2.8 Rollieflex. The first time I used I took a picture used by Columbia records. It paid for the birth of m first son.

Great photos...with a cost, but with nostalgic feelings! v

Occasionally I use film cameras especially the medium formats. The nostalgic and raw emotions attached to the look of film photos and the excitement of having them developed make them a special alternative choice to digital photography.

An attractive presentation of your adventure with the FM2, but yikes, at what a cost! Once I switched to digital in 2001, I sold my film camera and never looked back. V.

We have become so spoiled with the endless chances of catching the great shot :) Looks like you made good use of your 36 :) Neat shot V

Something I should do as well. I have my FM still which was my first serious camera also purchased during college with a 50mm f1.4 for the then astronomical price of $477. You have inspired me Raymond.

Great photo of the camera resting on the barbecue pictures. I remember my FM2 fondly.

a joy to use again, except when paying the exorbitant charges...love the image with a true classic camera and good old prints rather than bits and bytes..

Nicely presented! I had a Minolta x370 for my college photography class. Unfortunately it doesn't work now, and although the points you make about the mechanical feel ring true with me I don't think I'd have the patience to go back to film.
