Detour!

I photographed this guy in my neighborhood. I was biking along a trail when a doe stepped out of the bush ahead of me. I wasn't planning to stop because there was only one way out and I was getting cold, but I slowed and as I got closer, hoping to encourage her off the trail so I could continue on, I saw this buck off to the side eyeing the doe. As soon as he saw me he turned his attention towards me, drool hanging form his mouth, and as I continued to get closer, he started scraping at the ground with one hoof and making threatening gestures with his head and upper part of his body. I was coming between him and his doe and it didn't seem like he was too pleased about that. I am not sure how aggressive a buck could be towards people, but I have already been charged by a buck once when I accidentally found myself between a buck and doe like this (also in this same area), so I figured backtracking and breaking a trail through the nearby bushes and risking slivers and scrapes from twigs was a better alternative than brushing up with this seemingly irritated buck. Once through the bush and on the other side, no longer coming between the buck and his doe, the buck no longer seemed to be irritated by my presence and even seemed comfortable with me approaching for a couple of shots in the late day light.

The warm light is wonderful as is his posture that shows off his antlers.

YOu did the right thing! Bucks, at this time of year, can be very easily provoked. He is stunning, and the light is perfect.
