February 6 - Do Mannequins Dream Of Plastic Families?

First things first...for those who don't know, the title of this image is a play on the title of the book that the Harrison Ford / Ridley Scott film 'Blade Runner' was based on: Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?

OK, the image... there is so much I like about this image that it's hard to know where to start!

I guess firstly I like it because it has a message in it, it tells a story. If, and it's a VERY big if, these mannequins could think, or dream for that matter, how would they feel stuck forever behind a pane of glass looking at 'real' people (makes me think of Pinnochio "I'm a real boy!")? To me, these ones at least just seem to be looking so intently at this man and his daughter that they just MUST be wishing they were real with real families of their own. I can't believe I actually start to feel sorry for them!

I also really like the different elements that make up the image: the man and the girl who just by themselves would make a nice image (what is he saying to her?), the converging lines in the reflection that draw the viewer from the mannequins to the man and girl, the reflection itself which just seems to magically blend from the mannequins' plastic world to the real world ( no post processing was done to achieve this, it just happened that way!) and the way I got lucky with a few little things like the gap under the man's foot and they way there are no people behind them to break up their silhouette (oh so close between to girl and the woman but still no overlap). Some of these are small things but to me they all add up.

In the end it's an image that I just like to look at, to explore, and for that reason it's one of my favourites.

Rant over :-)
