This hyrax is arboreal, shy and primarily nocturnal.
Eastern Tree Hyrax are common in the forests around Serena Mountain Lodge on Mount Kenya. The structure of this hotel is made of wood and the building blends in like a massive treehouse. Unfortunately these hyrax climb onto the hotel windows at night from where the territorial males often call. This extraordinary call is a series of blood-curdling shrieks building up to a crescendo.

On our first night at Serena Mountain Lodge my wife heard some scratching noises from outside the window of our room, she opened the curtain slightly to look out just as one of these guys decided to call -she almost needed defibrillated!

This is a rather poor image but check out the feet. Hyrax have hoof-like feet not dissimilar to elephants (to which they are related) and would seem very unlikely climbers. They have peculiar 3-toed hind feet with almost hoof-like nails on two of the toes (the inner toe has a claw). The forefeet have 5 toes. The soles of their fore- and hindfeet, which are moistened by special sweat glands, are remarkably soft and elastic, which works to increase their friction against the surface on which they are climbing. They have specialized muscles in the soles of the feet that help them to work almost like a suction cup.
