Impromptu dance, Delhi, India, 2008

These children were at play on a marble terrace surrounding a Hindu temple. It was late in the day and the reflection of the sun on the marble was blinding. I abstract the children by backlighting them and cropping most of them out of the frame. What they leave behind is pure exuberance.

Purity is a wonderful concept, Jenene. Its compatriots innocence and joy are at work here, too. The golden light, the abstracted energy, the clean sweep of the marble floor itself all work together to help us focus on a single moment in time that is both once and forever.

Thanks, Dandan, for noticing the tension crackling in the negative space between toe and floor. I was shooting on that terrace for about fifteen minutes and must have made twenty or thirty images of these kids at play. It was only when I put them into silhouettes, through backlighting, that they came alive for me.
