Fallen blossom, Botanical Garden, Belem, Brazil, 2010

The large pond in Belem’s Botanical Garden contains lily pads that are found in the nearby Amazon River. I zoomed in on a fallen blossom, poignantly adrift upon a lily pad. It is a miniature landscape in itself, telling the story of nature’s life cycle. It offers the natural world in microcosm, a style of photography that was introduced to me by my friend and fellow pbase photographer Tim May, who often explores such imagery. Yes, the vital green pads does indeed surround and support the dying blossom. As I noted in my caption, I had you and your approach to photography in mind while making this -- you often express the life cycle in your imagery.

I like the way the green swirls through the image. Like life surrounds death.

Thanks, Celia and Vera, for coming to this image. I am always exploring new avenues of expression, Celia. I think Tim May has played a huge part in my embrace of landscapes and romanticized imagery. As you will see, I still embrace photojournalism as well. This image is, as you say, Celia, about the cycle of life. Everything dies, even as it lives. And thanks, Vera, for seeing poetry here. I am flattered by your comment.

Poetic and dreamy image!

It is very surprising to see a romanticized expression of story-telling from you. I am used to your journalistic style, but it is lovely to see that you are willing to embrace other styles where appropriate to tell your story. A single fallen flower on its deathbed with shadows of death creeping up toward it is a very romantic and dramatic story indeed!
