Sunbather, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

It is an hour before sunset, and this sunbather takes the opportunity to catch the last rays of her day at the beach. While she does so, she holds an electronic device to her ear – it glows within her fingers. Using my spot-metering mode, I expose on the bright light reflecting off her legs, making the surrounding sand darker and the rest of the image feature the interplay of light and shadow. She seems utterly relaxed, a tribute, perhaps, to what she may hear coming from that glowing receiver. Is it the voice of a person, a recorded message, or a piece of music? I leave the answers up to our own imaginations.

Good observation, Jenene. Yet what may seem to be frivolity to you and me might well prove to be essential communication for someone else. I thought the glowing phone in her hand might suggest a magical call here. For you and I, such magic might well be nothing more than a nuisance.

I have never much liked talking on the phone and this seems almost a crime against nature! Since I also have never been a sunbather (imagine a California girl saying that!), but prefer to be active while outdoors, I'm supposing that this conversation is, at best, frivolous. Purely my point of view influencing how I see this.

I can't forget mine -- it is attached to me. However, I only use it to make emergency calls to Liz, such as what brand of dog food to buy for Judy. The answer to your question is, for me at least, a moot point. For me, Email has largely replaced phone communication

You just can't leave home without it. I've even felt the panic of forgetting my cell phone. What did we ever do before cell phones?
