Tension, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

I saw this person at a distance, sitting by the sea, hunching forward in a nearly collapsed beach chair. He was talking on a cellular phone while a pair of surfers played on the Pacific’s waves behind him. His body language expresses tension, while his context incongruously suggests a place for relaxation and pleasure. I composed the image so that the layered supporting context helps tell the story. The diagonal tire tracks in the sand at bottom echoes the diagonal position of the chair’s back, as well as the horizontal thrust of nearby Pacific Beach’s Crystal Pier in the background. The anxious man is squeezed between them.

Good to hear from you, Bernard -- you summarize the message of this image beautifully. I hardly use a cell phone myself -- I rarely give out my number, and use it primarily to ask my wife questions when I am shopping, etc.

Your 'mobile' man crossed the lines that divide the tumultuous world from the relaxing one and he still can't escape and break away from the daily humdrum. Glad I don't use, what you call across the seas, a cell phone.

Thanks, Jenene, for noting that this could be a local who must meet daily obligations while "relaxing" on the beach. And yes, it all comes down to context. Everyday routines carried out in exotic contexts can obscure the special nature of that context.

Most likely a local on break, communicating with an anxious wife or boss! It's funny how we get so accustomed to our environment and what we see everyday as commonplace - even if it's the Pacific ocean and a beautiful, 'relaxing' beach.
