Feline observer, Astoria, Oregon, 2009

When I first saw this white cat sitting in the window of a white house in front of a white shade, I was amused. It seemed as if it was trying to blend in and become an invisible observer. I saw that as incongruous, and made this image. Not only is it incongruous to see a cat squeezed between a window shade and a window – it is also incongruous just to note the similarity of the colors here. I also like the soft glow of light and shadow on the peeling white wall of the house, adding just a touch of warmth to the scene.

Even though seeing a cat in a window is a common sight, you are right in your observation of how the cat looks is if it tries to blend in. Now i absolutely must find one of my old pictures from Iceland and post in my training gallery for you. It is very similar only it has a bit of a small twist...the cat in your window is a dog in my window... Let me go and browse through my old photos...

We watch the watcher, indeed. Thanks,Rose, for your pbase message telling me that in some cultures, this scene would be a bad omen, since they may associate white cats with death. In that case, this house would be haunted. It is amazing how such context can change the meaning of a picture for us.
