Ranger’s bike, Castle Geyser, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 2008

The ranger who parked this bike just off a Yellowstone tourist trail is a very trusting soul. I found the juxtaposition of parked bike and the ranger hat to be very incongruous. It is as if the bike has suddenly come to life as a ranger. Meanwhile, the real ranger was nowhere to be seen.

Well said, Dave -- robotic rangers, robotic tourists, and ultimately robotic photographers, all triggered by a shot of a hat left on a bike. The message you describe here comes from your imagination, and I hope that all who will see this photograph will have their own imaginative interpretations.

I'm tempted to say the ranger was nowhere to be seen because indeed this was the ranger - no need for a living one when the self-propelled robotic version will do just as nicely, or better, thank you.

Perhaps one day, if we give them souls, or if they figure out a way to create them on their own, our robots will visit the park, too. Will the have the need to make photographs, as humans do?
