Harvesting Ice

Nearby Brookfield, Vt was holding an Ice Harvest Festival this weekend. This is appropriate since it's 6F degrees out right now. The ice was about 14 inches thick on this lake. Here one fellow is sawing the ice into a block.

That is fascinating to see. We could use a few of those ice blocks here Down-Under just now!

That's pretty cool. Something you rarely see anywhere. I love this image.

Wonderful image, reminds me of my childhood cutting ice to make ice cream.

A vision of times past indeed. With 14 inches of ice you must have had more consistent cold weather than we have.

Very interesting Patti, they used to do this on the Mississippi in the 1900's but the dams and locks we have now the ice doesn't get thick enough. Great history lesson, the blocks were stored in an ice house surrounded by straw and they would have ice all year long.

Exactly what Walter said - a long lost tradition. Thanks Patti.

Interesting - do they carve the ice blocks?
