Magellanic Woodpecker

The largest woodpecker of South America, endemic to temparate Nothofagus dominated forests of southern Chile and Argentina. Research shows juvenile and young adult Magellanic Woodpeckers stay on the natal territory for years with the parents, forming family groups of 3-5 that all roost in a shared cavity during fall and winter. Breeding pairs raise one nestling only, without helpers at the nest.
