In terms of seasonal temperatures it was 'a touch' cold last night in Yuma resulting in the morning also being 'a bit cool'. After having coffee with friends we were returning home near 10:00 am when this Road Runner was spotted ... "running down the road" ... Road Runner ... running down the road ... get it! ... ... on a couple occasions it stopped a minute or two ... 'puffing out' the back part of it's body ... never having observed this before I quickly got the camera ...
Spring having just arrived I initially thought this behavior might be a mating display however a couple 'googles' later the Audubon Magazine informed me: "to recharge its internal furnace in the morning, it orients its back to the sun, lifting its feathers and exposing its black skin go collect solar energy" and that's exactly what occurred ie the Road Runner's back was pointing directly at the sun ... constantly ... Nature is full of hidden surprises ...
