Black-tailed Jackrabbit

Yuma, Arizona

These Black-tailed Jackrabbits were discovered in a lemon grove while stalking a Red-tail Hawk perched high atop a windmill tower. The Hawk waits patiently until one of the rabbits breaks out into open ground ... then it swoops down to capture its meal. The jackrabbits are capable of covering 20 ft in one bound and can reach speeds in excess of 35 mph ... similar to deer, when escaping from predators, they will flash the white underside of their tail to alert other jackrabbits ... and they are big ... when standing on their hind legs they resemble small kangaroos. Initially they were quite shy however if I stood motionless for 15 minutes or so ... their curiosity would eventually take over whereupon they would leave their cover and ever so slowly ... taking only a few hops at a time ... come over to investigate.
