About Nilo Arribas Jr

I am an avid birdwatcher and a prolific wildlife photographer with particular interest in the wild birds of the Philippines.

My fascination on Philippine wildlife in general and birds in particular started at a very young age. This I feel was largely influenced by my exposure to the tribal practices of my maternal roots in the remote villages of Mindanao, Philippines. I have fond memories of the time where much of the daily sustenance of the local folks can be had from the pristine forests, rich soil for crops, clean river system and abundant seas. Sadly, this is no longer the case in recent years. The massive exploitation of our environment and natural resources have put so much pressure on what is left of our wildlife.

There are over 600 species of birds in the Philippines. About a third or 200 species are found nowhere else in the world! Majority of these species are threatened and critically endangered primarily due to loss of habitat. My numerous travels around the country have yielded first hand experience of the systematic and often massive transformation of our remaining original forests, water system and other natural resources. As a natural consequence, the species and wildlife that are dependent on these resources are often very difficult to see in their natural habitat or what is left of it.

It is easy to get depressed with the state of our environment and the reality that some of the species may disappear forever in the not so distant future.

I do hope that the photos in these galleries will inspire others to take an active role in reversing the trend in environmental degradation. There are still a lot of opportunities to enjoy the wonders of our natural world and effect positive change. Even with limited resources, our individual efforts and commitment can make a difference.
