ColdMicro.jpg

My trusty Spencer microscope outside on my deck for snow photography. I cleaned off the grease on the focusing mechanism and replaced with 3 in 1 oil because it was impossible to focus in the cold. Custom eyepiece adapter made to fit the exterior lugs on the 5 megapixel Minolta Dimage 7. Notice the small wedge of wood used to keep the lens zoomed to the correct location to prevent vigneting. The scope is left outside for about 20 minutes to chill down along with all the glass slides. I use a Digipower Li-Ion battery pack and keep the camera on at all times to keep warm.
The camera removes easily with a quarter turn. Camera and Digipower worked flawlessly in the cold. (about 5 degrees F when the picture was taken). A heat filter from an old projector and a standard polarizer are stacked on top of the substage illuminator. A fixed polarizer is kept permanently in the body of the eyepiece adapter. The lower polarizer is rotated.
