This prefecture-level city started as an inland port where the Jiangmen River flows into Xijiang (西江 West River), a tributary of the Pearl River. It provided access to the four counties (四邑 Sze Yup) of Taishan (台山), Kaiping (開平), Enping (恩平), and Xinhui (新會). Their family of dialects, closely related to Cantonese, is still widely spoken in oversea Chinese communities.
