Moon & Mars

Tucson, AZ

The Moon came pretty close to occulting Mars as seen from Tucson last night. The Moon is approximately 0.5 degrees in diameter, so Mars appears to be only 0.2 degrees or so away from the Moon. This image illustrates the apparent size differences between the Moon and Mars. There are usually stories on the internet that claim that Mars will be as big as the Moon when closest to the Earth. The largest apparent size of Mars is only about twice as much of the size in this image --- not even close to looking like the same size as the Moon.

I selectively applied some post image processing to reduce some of the brightness and increase contrast in the Moon, while keeping Mars unprocessed.

wow- what a great one! I have been trying to get the moon lately, and I have a 300mm macro lens. How do I get the moon really close so it still doesnt seem so far?
Great work.

Great shot, Sam! I got a shot of Moon and Mars last night too! Don't think I was as wonderfully successful as you! Big Vote.
