Hi Pat..I was born in the Bronx in 1939 and lived on Walton Ave. between 168th St. and 169th St. until the age of 12. Attended PS 114 and JHS 22. I have such great memories of living in the Bronx. All my family lived nearby and every Sunday we would always get together! Such heartfelt memories! I constantly dream of my old apartment and can still Visualize every room and even every closet. As a youngster I always got in trouble for sitting on the firescape to cool off in the summertime. I remember the milkman deliveries..the "I Cash Clothes" man yelling from the street..neighbors sitting on the stoop and in chairs in front of my building...going to the movie theater on 167th st. near Jerome Ave. where they had a special " children's section" and a "matron" who watched over us so our Moms could go shopping and knew we were safe. While attending 5th grade I was finally allowed to walk home by myself, but was not allowed to cross Jerome Ave. I had to go up the stairs of the El train stop in order to cross Jerome Ave. without getting hit by a car.Sometimes my Mom didn't believe me so I would buy her a flower from a man named "Ralph" who had a flower stand up on the train station!! Then she would trust me!! I remember the beautiful holiday parades on the Grand Concourse! No police security was needed in those days..my neighborhood was safe back then!!I remember the big snowstorm of 1947...cars couldn't climb the hills of the side streets leading up to the Grand Concourse..and going down those hills were life threatening!! I wish I could relive those days...I will NEVER forget the good old Bronx!!!
