Hatteras Fisherman -Al Farris

For generations independent commercial fishermen have fished the waters of Hatteras Island as a means to support and feed their familes. This folder contains a number of photographs of Hatteras Fisherman Al Fariss, who has worked in the fishing industry since 1981. As an independant commercial fisherman, Al Fariss fishes in much the same manner as it has been done for generations. It is a tough and at times lonely and dangerous profession dealing daily with the weather conditions, patterns of the movement of the fish, increased operational costs and numerous government regulations. It is a way of life that has become increasingly difficult and a profession that is struggling to survive. Even though Al Farris is just one of many Hatteras fishermen, he represents all of the hard working fisherman and individuals associated with the fishing industry of Hatteras N.C. Theses images portray a hard working and very independant individual who I consider a friend. Al, stay safe and the best of luck on the water.
8/2014 Update- It is my understanding that new regulations have halted Al's livelihood as a fisherman.
