Simeone Automotive Museum -- July 2008, March 2010, Nov. 2010 & Sept. 2011

The Simeone Foundation opened its race car museum in Philadelphia in June 2008. I visited the facility for the first time on July 12, 2008.

I used my handheld Nikon D300 and Nikkor 18-200mm VR zoom to photograph the bulk of Dr. Fred Simeone's impressive collection of 64 vintage automobiles. His racing cars are grouped according to the venues or types of racing in which they competed. For more information on the museum, its exhibits and its cars, visit http://www.simeonefoundation.org or http://simeonemuseum.org/.

I updated this gallery's titles/captions on July 28, 2008. I added three photos of the museums's latest acquisition -- a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport race car -- on March 15, 2010. I added 21 photos on Nov. 15, 2010, mostly of sporty road cars I had no time to photograph before. On May 22, 2012, I added three photos of a 1963 Ferrari 250 LM. I shot those pictures on Sept. 17, 2011.

I have settled on the following picture control settings as my D300 defaults: picture control STANDARD, sharpening 7, saturation +1, contrast 0, brightness 0 and hue 0. These were the settings I used to take the photos featured in this gallery. I relied on normal and high Active D-Lighting to deal with the museum’s contrasty lighting and to extend my images’ dynamic range. My other settings were: focus mode AF-S; AF-area mode single; VR control on; exposure modes programmed automatic, aperture-priority auto and full manual; metering mode center-weighted; color space sRGB; and image format JPEG fine.

Having only a limited amount of time available for photography, I usually shoot JPEGs that I try to nail down in such a way that little or no further work outside the camera would be necessary. Crucial in this effort are the accuracy and consistency of my D300's calibrated LCD monitor (brightness -2).
