China in 1985

I shot the photos in this gallery in 1985 during two trips to China that altogether lasted about 12 or 14 weeks. I used Nikon lenses and SLRs (FM, FE, FE2), as well as Kodak Ektachrome films. ... I digitized the slides in late 2003 and early 2004 with the help of a Nikon Coolpix 4300 and an ES-E28 slide copying adapter. All the images were full-frame shots, but the ES-E28 cropped them slightly. Alas, this slight cropping was unavoidable. ... Eventually, I plan to use a Nikon Coolscan to re-digitize these and my other favorite images from the film era. ... I downsized all the photos here for online viewing.

I am crying. These photos retrieve my memory of Chengdu where I spent my childhood there. I am so sad that the city has experienced dramatic change. My impression of the old city, a quite and peaceful place full of old houses and narrow alleys, is totally inconsistent with the current form which is a metropolitian crowded by cars and non-native citizens. I just hope the time machine can be invented one day that I can travel back.

Definitely an excellent gallery. The photos are accurate, well composed and they all tell a little story, never banal.
