Inspired by a 1965 movie, Tom McRae launched a real "Great Race" in 1983. The race ran annually until 2007 as a time-speed-distance rally rather than solely as a contest of speed. Hemmings Motor News and Coker Tire revived it this year with the help of other sponsors, such as Hagerty Collector Car Insurance and Passport Transport. The seven-day rally from Chattanooga, TN, to Bennington, VT, made an overnight stop at the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum in Hershey, PA, on its fourth day, June 14. In this gallery, I am happy to share the pictures I took there of some of the participants' vintage cars. The names of the drivers and co-drivers are indicated. Ten bonus photos taken after The Elegance at Hershey are included here. A sudden and severe thunderstorm prompted the early and rapid departure of most the entries, leading to the cancellation of the June 12 awarding ceremony. This unfortunate turn of events wiped out my plan to photograph the award-winning cars. This was particularly frustrating because the inaugural event had attracted a superb array of fine automobiles, two of which are featured here.
