John has great heart plus youthful enthusiasm coupled with a creative mind, all of which he's never lost and has brought to his sailing endeavours for over sixty years. John bought his first cat rigged boat in 1947, with his paper route earnings. Like any other great "Water Rat", he has been messing about in boats ever since.


John had built and sailed PALEOMAG, a 37 ft / 10 m cat ketch designed by Jerry Milgram of CASCADE fame. Clearly no stranger to sailing cat rig boats, John bought BLUEBERRY in January 2008.

John has been investing his head, heart, and money in his "cruising Laser" with interesting and fun results. The 22 is a real "sports car" amongst the Nonsuch models. John regularly sails in events including San Francisco Bay Single-handed Sailing Society competitions . . . http://www.sfbaysss.org/ John volunteers as the Information Officer for this San Francisco SSS.

"Below is a photo of Dave Vickland sailing his small cat boat. From the relaxed body position, it might well have been a picture of me in 1947 on Ramsey Lake in Sudbury, Ontario.

I did this after I chased the ice off the lake and taught myself how to sail based on what I read in Arthur Ransome's series of childen's books set in the Lake Country of England . . . Swallows and Amazons."
