This large Woodpecker is an European Species. Here is the female, with black malar stripe. That of male is red, finely bordered with black.

This Woodpecker feeds on ants, probing the soil with its bill. It lives in woodlands, parks, gardens and open country with scattered trees.

Its laughing call is very common and often heard in our region.

It is a very beautiful bird!
