The twins in the waterhole.jpg

Two almost identical white mares are part a large band of wild horses dominated by the stallion "Butch". My son and I have not named these two, but we call them "the twins". We have many images of them next to each other, and for the 18 months that we have photographed the mustangs, they have been inseperable. I don't think that they are twins, but there is an uncanny closeness shared by them. Even the young colts they bore this last summer were close in color to each other. I have never seen them more than 10 yards away from each other.

This image was taken at the waterhole from a distance of about 150 feet away with my long lens and cropped in for a closer view. You can see that they are very wary of me on the far bank of the water.

Pentax K20D ,Sigma 50-500mm
Images were shot using a long lens. The mustangs were not disrupted from their normal activities. hide exif

Horses are one of the species, like humans, that form what I would call "true" friendships. They often form strong bonds with one another and spent a lot of time together (preferring each other to other horses), eating and playing together, and of course grooming each other. They become distressed when separated. And like human friendships, the bond is not necessarily formed because of relatedness. They simply enjoy being around their friend. One of my favorite things about horses! :)
