Not to be a pain, but I think not having the King there adds a nice twist to "alone". Its like theres been a war, everyone including the King are dead but all that remains is the one brave soldier who through his skill, honour and will has remained alive. And now stands all on his own on the blood-filled land that was once his home, with no companion other than the painful thoughts in his head.
I agree with Jim, image is great, fits the challenge well.

I feel like this image is a little static. The composition is perfectly simetrical, which really draws the attention to the single subject. In that sense, the photograph is sucessful, but I find it won't keep my attention long. Also, I have to second the "knowledge of chess" comment, it should have been a king at least...but even that isn't possible :) Perhaps you could reshoot with all the pieces of one color, and only the king of the other, surrounded by them...just an idea :)
