this afternoon I returned home from an early dinner out and, to my amazement, my considerable front yard was full of dragonflies. they were large ones of the sort we used to call helicopters when we were small. Hundreds, no exaggeration, were swarming, darting, spiralling from a few inches above the grass to 20, 30, 40 feet in the air! I walked out among the swarm and held my arms out, knowing that the mosquitos and gnats they favor would be attracted to the carbon dioxide I exuded from my pores. These creatures, most of them blue, but some brown with yellow stripes darted around me, through my hair, beneath my outstretched arms, so close I could hear the buzz of their wings! They were large, like I've said, about the size of hummingbirds. Although I was sweating in the August heat, not a single midge, gnat nor mosqito alighted on me! In the space of 5 minutes, a mitzva!
