The Desert Castles lie to the east of Amman, towards Iraq.
They are not easily accessible, and many of them are now
nothing but ruins. Various theories have been put forward
about the original purpose of these buildings. The favourite
is that these were "weekend retreats" or hunting lodges for
the Omayed rulers. The appeal of Qasr Azraq is as the castle
in which Lawrence of Arabia spent some weeks during which
time he planned the assault on Deraa which led to the entry
into Damascus.
