Belmopan, the Nation's Capital
was re-established in the Cayo District following devastation to the former capitol, Belize City, by Hurricane Hattie in 1965. Belmopan is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Belize City and 20 miles east of San Ignacio.

A population of only 6,000 makes Belmopan the smallest capital in the world, which makes everything close at hand. You can walk from your hotel to the government buildings in a matter of minutes. If you prefer a taxi, it's $US 2.50 to anywhere in town.
