The Pendant,..

This mooring pendant appeared to be brand new that season and evidenced virtually no growth below the water At the point this photo was taken we had not yet had any significant wave or wind in the mooring field. This pendant had clearly been chafing and wearing on the anchor. With only one pendant, that had this much wear in mostly benign conditions, could be cause for trouble come bad weather.

During hurricane Sandy our Tashiba 40 ended up on the beach in Centerport, LI. Our 600 lbs mooring stayed in place after a 93MPH wind exposure at the north end of Northport Harbor. All canvas, sails and halyards had been removed in preparation for winter storage. Two brand new 3/4" diameter Yale pendants and two 3/4" premium three strand, attached to the mooring as backup, parted. All had the best chafe gear secured at key points. Post investigation showed the chafe gear was not significantly damaged and the pendants melted inside the chafe protection. Just before leaving the boat in preparing for the onset of Sandy I was about to run a long loop of anchor chain to the mooring as an ultimate backup, but decided it was overkill. This was a serious mistake now looking back at what happened.
