Summer Dance - Interlude (Christine P. Newman)

Author Comment:

This image is titled “Summer Dance – Interlude”. It is part of a series of pictures featuring a ballerina leisurely enjoying the summer (see http://www.pbase.com/eb2005/summerdance).

Incongruity and human values are found in this picture in the following ways:

* This ballerina, enjoying a moment of rest on huge tires from a large piece of farm equipment, is out of her usual environment. The heaviness of the tires contrasts with the ethereal sense of the ballerina. She does not seem to belong there.

* Ballerinas are usually clean, disciplined, self-restrained, light, pretty, made-up, engrossed in their art and seem almost inaccessible. This ballerina’s body language indicates that she is relaxed, content, friendly, somewhat in her own world and far from the discipline of ballet. Without make-up, she looks natural, happy and alert, but undisciplined (perhaps slightly rebellious?) and seems to enjoy the freedom of summer – just look at her dirty shoes! Her smile and the lively colours of her dress add to the wittiness of the situation and the liveliness of the whole picture.

* The environment, consisting of old outgrown small farm building differs significantly from the ballet studio, adding to the incongruity of the picture.
