Blooming Agave

Big Bend National Park, Texas

Agave americana is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, native to Mexico and the United States in Texas
although today, it is cultivated worldwide as an ornamental plant.
It is monocarpic, meaning it will bloom once in its lifetime and die after the seeds drop. That bloom may not appear for 10, 20 or more years, depending on the climate.

Wow. Your agaves function a little differently to ours, which are more commonly the related agave attenuata. When ours "flower" they don't grow up in a woody stalk with branches like that, but send a large, incredibly fast growing flower stalk out (up to about 12' in height) which can't hold its weight so it doubles over. Then that's it for that agave, but you can expect new ones to bloom in its wake. It's interesting to see the different style of the Americana here.

it resembles a tree now...seems the inflorescence has required so much energy and perhaps water that the lower leaves have expired...wise placement of it in the frame is to be admired..
