Honey was the star of the BBC series 'Big Cat Diaries' - well, at least one of the stars! In May of 2006, she had 5 cubs that were a month or two old, this is when we were there. She was known at this time to be at the base of the hill that Kichwa Tembo is on, in between the camp and the airstrip. This cat is right at the base of that hill. Later on, sometime over the summer of that year, she lost one of her cubs to a lion attack. As well, during heavy rain storms, one more of her cubs drowned, this left her with three boys. And, as boys will be boys, one of the cubs' paws were hurt in February 2007. As this cub was being 'left out' of hunting lessons and playtime with the other cubs, KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service) decided to intervene to fix the hurt paw. They sedated Honey while they fixed the cub's sore paw. But alas, as Honey was left out in the hot sun, under sedation, she died. A hue and cry went up, the vet was fired, and KWS fed the threee young orphans 'from afar' by leaving them game. Eventually as KWS watched, instinct kicked in, and the three boys learned to hunt for themselves. They are alive and well today over on the other side of the Mara River.
