I've just finished watching a really good game of Champions' League football between Benfica and Barcelona. It was one of these games that had everything, apart from goals... although how both teams managed to spurn all of the chances they were gifted will always perplex me. Barcelona were the worst culprits in this respect. They did the hard part of actually getting the ball and players into goal scoring positions so well - before fluffing the easy part by either shooting wide or hitting the ball straight at the goalkeeper. It wasn't all down to missed chances, however, as the Benfica goalkeeper managed to make at least three superb instinctive saves. At the other end, for most of the game Benfica were limited to long range shots from outside the penalty box, with none of their attempts on goal really troubling the Barca goalie. Barcelona were the better team on the night... but they didn't score, which means that all is still to play for at next week's return match at the Camp Nou. Barca have home advantage and they remain hot favourites to lift the trophy, but only a fool would write off Benfica, who have already eliminated the reigning champions, Liverpool, as well as Manchester United - and holding Barca to a 0-0 draw is an achievement in itself. The return leg should be a cracker, so I don't think you need three guesses to figure out what I'll be doing next Wednesday evening.
