Errol Station Stu

A bit shoogly

A short gap between postings. Ought I to apologise for this 'abuse' of the meta gallery, or should I just publish and be damned? No competition, I'm pleased to say. The diehards can, in the words of Bart, 'eat my shorts'. I'm playing catch-up. It is not the first time I have done it, and I will probably pass out in amazement should I never do it again. I racked my mind trying to think of something to do during the 45 minutes until Liam's guitar lesson was over, and the best I could come up with was a drive in the direction of Errol. I eventually pulled up at Errol Station, which, in the days before Beeching and his incredible scissors, served the nearby village that gives it its name and the neighbouring WWII RAF airfield. Errol Station has been closed for over 40 years now, but the platform is still there, as are assorted pieces of timber, 60mm gravel and several other items of railway equipment. Now all the station does is serve tea and coffee - although when I was there I had to make do with a notice telling me that I had missed the best cup of coffee that I would ever drink. I am tempted to believe that the person making this statement is telling the truth - I'll just have to take their word for it. Liam's guitar lesson is boring, he says, and his instructor only teaches him boring old music that he doesn't really want to learn. I spent too much time photographing Errol Station, and was 15 minutes late picking Liam up. The evening was beautiful: the landscape is as flat as a pancake, while the sky was a glorious colour, which, unfortunately, my Carl Zeiss could not focus on. The CZ lens is an M42 fit, and one of the limitations of the Nikon AF adaptor is loss of infinity focusing. Still... can't really complain considering the price I paid for the lens.

Scotland have improved a bit since losing to Hungary last year

Is this from the Railtrack training manual?
Guest 29-Aug-2005 20:20
You can say that again

I sure hope no train is coming down the track. It would be a real mess.

Hopefully Liam wasn't too put out. Terrific shot, Stu.

Shoogly is a new one on me - Scottish I presume?

Interesting take on the tracks, which I presume do NOT handle the Glasgow to Aberdeen expresses!

I remember hearing that Errol station remained open for the odd special train some years after its closure, which may account for the platform still being in situ.

Oh this is good, I like the colour and DOF

Haven't heard the word shoogly for a while.
I liked that too. :-)

My kind of shot, Stu.
Tracks look like the Amtrak rails between BOS and WAS that closed down the Metroliner for a long time :)

now, you know I was looking between the ties for a soldier.... :) lovely lines in this one, even though I'd hate to be travelling on those tracks..

If the train goes off the track, can I get my money back (you must say it in iambic (sic) pentameter. Nice one. The rails still look like wonderful metal, though a bit awry.
