Mending the roof

10 August 2004

112.
As a consequence of yesterday's rainstorms, we discovered that we have a leak in our roof. The rain didn't stop all night, and we were kept awake with the sound of the water dripping into pots. First thing this morning, I phoned our odd-job-man and asked him if he could come and have a look. He turned up a couple of hours later and up he went... apparently there was a crack in the lead flashing. He repaired it and a couple of other things about the house that needed seeing to. We got to chatting, and had a great big conversation about our mutual lack of materialist desires and about his contacts with skilled tradesmen who will be engaged to help us with our new kitchen (when we eventually get round to it). My handyman is called Dave, and a nicer bloke you couldn't hope to meet. He was here for about 3 hours, and we agreed a price in advance... yet, he won't take any money until we are satisfied that the leak has been plugged. Do you believe it!!!

Great shot Stu! I like your vantage point and the high contrast. This works really well in B/W.

Neat perspective, and definitely representative of the day! Hope the rain paused while he was up on the roof. Sounds like a very decent fellow -- maybe it's that honest face of yours!

Once upon a time when deals were settled on a handshake. Dave sounds like he's from that era. Isn't it great !!
Like the image, though my knees knock at the thought of climbing that ladder.

Wonderful image! This works great in black and white.

After spending hours with various handymen this spring, I only had one that was a bum about doing a decent job for his pay. Not that they waited to see if I was satisfied before taking the money...thanks for the nice comment about my clydesdale photo; I'd love to see where they come from.

Just looking at the picture, I thought you were having Tony Blair 'round for tea. Is he willing to travel South? We have a strange gurgling boiler. I really like this as a photograph btw, it's very well composed.

I like that.. an old-fashioned person who wants to DO a good job and wants his customer pleased. Latch onto this one for keepers.

That dude is a keeper. Very rare.

Do you think he's come to work here? That's the kind of craftsman we need. Nice perspective.
