1186. A matança da porca

21 de Fevereiro de 2009

It doesn't do to be hypocritical about the life and, particularly, the death of farm animals. Their lives are, in the main, nasty, brutish and short. This was the first time I witnessed the act of slaughter, and what sticks in my mind most about it is the noise the sow made as the knife sliced through her artery. I don't think I'll forget that sound any time soon. Later that day, after watching Sporting beat Benfica 3-2, we had barbecued fresh pork, and it was very, very tasty.

First, let me say you've made a great capture here.

Secondly, I grew up in a very small farm community & life at that time for farm animals was not brutish. Of course it could be different now & in other cultures but my experience was that farmers respected and took very good care of their animals. And when they killed & butchered them it was a fundamental part of life and they took it very seriously.

However, I do emphatically agree with your description of witnessing your first slaughter of a pig. Mine was equally horrifying. And I have never forgotten it. But as the years have passed I also realize it is just part of life on this planet. I have strong feelings about what goes on because of mass production but this scene you have posted is the essence of life. This is tradition. Culture. And unless you back out and show me this is a pig factory I have to say this reminds me of my early life. And it was a good life.

There is nothing quite so disturbing as the slaughter of an animal, and yet, there is nothing quite so delightful as the resulting well cooked meat. I think it's one of life's little jokes on humanity.
