Yungay's Tribute

Sunday, May 31, 1970, 3.30 PM, an earthquake of 8.3 on the Ritcher scale localized 70 kilometers deep in the Pacific Ocean in front, 210 kilometers away from Callejón de Huaylas with a duration of over one minute takes place. Minutes latter, Huaraz is 95% destroyed and also adjacent towns like Ranrailca. Twenty thousand tons of perpetual ice from Huascarán's north face glacier gives off in a mad carreer down hill against tranquil Yungay. Geologist calculates 150 miles per hour the mud avalanche to cross 4 kilometers in 3 minutes to literally wipe a complete medium town and bury 20,000 thousand inocent people. Very few people saved their lives, only those lucky ones who were in the highlands and cemetery at the time of the quake & avalanche.
