10th March 2004 - stir-fry for supper

With the scoffer back, I thought it would be appropriate to have a foodie pic today as a show of solidarity.

So we’re having sweet and sour cashew nut and vegetable stir-fry flavoured with garlic, chilli and ginger – yum!

In fact, here are the veggies going into the wok!

I thought I was going to have a nice colourful shot of a Southall sari shop to show you today as I’ve been on an emergency dash over there today but the weather was horrible, dark and cold and snowing (again). It meant that my max of 400asa on the G3 couldn’t cope. Where did March go? It’s supposed to be getting milder and nicer but it seems to be going backwards.

My emergency dash was in search of pink fabric (TNS pink) to match our exhibition stand for next week’s industry conference in Wales. We’ve decided to go really OTT, dress up the stand with loads of pink fabric and give all our clients and other guests pink smoothies. Last year we were still boring blue and red so this is the first BHBIA with the new livery. I promised ages ago to get the pink fabric and have left it to the last minute then couldn’t source any locally to the office. With only two business days to go or a desperate last-minute change of plan, it had to be Southall to be sure of getting some. The Asian community sure knowa thing or two about colour – everything is vibrant and bright……I knew the place wouldn’t let me down and it didn’t.

So, sitting downstairs in a carrier bag, ten metres of finest fuchsia pink satin and a smoothie maker still in its box!

I still think most of my colleagues have no idea of the effort that goes into making these things look and feel good for them. The Louises and I charge around like headless chickens most of the time.

All we have to do now is source the strawberries for our pink drink, empty Woolies of pink sweets and away we go.

WOW !!! I would drop them until they were suitable only for cream soup and never get this shot.

Aw look, it isn't faked, really! The only element of faking is that the wok isn't on the stove.

It's on the dining table with a bit of black velvet behind the wok. I'd pre-prepared the veggies and set up the studio lights. David had a big handful of veggies and when i said go, he dropped them into the pan and I shot my pic. I did about 5-6 unsuccessful ones first - the first 3-4 had no veggies in them!!! I shot either too soon or too late and the penultimate one was framed right but had lots of overblown highlights.

The 'pinheads' are bits of broccolli and sweetcorn stuck to other veg.

Jill - there is a bit of a clue about your surprise here....not that I want to get you over-excited!

GOBSMACKED!!!!! HOW did you do this? It's brilliant!!!

... and all this from a girl who told me what a waste of money my New York smoothie maker was when I bought it (try telling my boys that, we LOVE it!!!).

Oh man, this is soooo smart, Linda. If it wasn't that li'l pin head, I would have no clue about how it was done. Very cool, and beautiful image too!

Mmm Mmm
I guess the asian fabric shops in places like Woking here are not quite what you want?
Guest 10-Mar-2004 21:02

Looks and sounds scrumptious!! I love stir fry :) Did you actually take this as you were dropping them in to the wok? FABULOUS idea!! Very creative. I know what you mean about the Asian community knowing color -- when I was a teenager I went to Chinatown in Chicago and was literally blown away at the beautiful array of splendor in colors that surrounded me at every look. That is perhaps why I have so many Asian things in my home... I love the colors and the details in shape and texture. But I digress.. :oÞ
