24th August 2014 - taking my pleasure where I can

Yesterday one of my best buddies, who happens to be a West Ham fan but we won’t hold that against him, posted on Facebook “Above Arsenal, above Liverpool, but best of all above Tottenham”. I was a bit peeved because Spurs had only played one game whereas the Hammers had played two. Not only that but the one game we’d played at that point was against West Ham and we’d beaten them!

Our game (for anyone who doesn’t know or doesn’t care) was today, not yesterday. We were involved in our second London derby of the season, which was against QPR. Now I have a particular dislike of QPR for reasons that are complicated but I do love ‘arry and Glen and all of the ex-Spurs players who are now playing for them.

My second peeve of the day was that our game’s only live coverage was on Radio 5 and I hate radio commentary of football. The commentators tend to forget that their audience can’t see what’s going on and therefore I struggle to follow the action. Anyway, a combination of the BBC’s live text on their website, combined with Radio 5’s spoken commentary was all there was so it had to do.

Imagine my thrill then when I get the message that things are going rather well. In fact, they’re going so well that we seem to have taken everyone by surprise with our 4-0 thumping of the Rs. The players who were being written off last season have suddenly gelled and the signing of Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon seems to have been a master stroke. We were 2-0 up and I was thinking “a couple more and we’ll go top”. We went 3-0 up and suddenly it seemed like a real possibility. Then, to cap it off Emmanuel Adebayor got one and in a flash, the live update of the table was showing us at the top of the table.

OK, I know there is a long, long way to go, another 36 games in fact. We’ve got Liverpool next weekend and that’ll be a much more challenging test but for now, I’m a happy bunny. (And let's face it, this doesn't happen very often for us Spurs fans so I'm going to celebrate it.)

The new manager looks like he'll have them playing the Spurs way which is great. I want Eric Dier for my fantasy team! Google 'wiziwig' for live streaming of games.
