28th September 2013 - at risk of tornadoes

We were on our way home from the dump this afternoon and I was thinking I’d put the camera in the car for nothing! Mind you, what I’d expected to see on a journey to the dump, the supermarket and the petrol station I’m not at all sure. However, the number of times we go out and I think “oh I wish I’d got my camera with me”, so have it I did. The other common problem is the camera in the Uni rucksack on the back seat and me unable to grab it in time.

Last week, I was driving past this point and a gaggle of about 7-8 magpies and a buzzard were sharing the spoils from a road kill rabbit. The magpies were scared off by my car, although I can’t understand why any critter would be scared of the sunshine bus but there you go. So, the buzzard, left to his own devices, tried to take off with the rabbit’s remains in his talons but dropped it almost immediately. He flew alongside the car, at my head height for a good few metres and I so wished I’d had both the camera and the free hands with which to shoot some photos of the beautiful creature but it was not to be.

Today, then, when a herd of cows started to cross the road in front of the car, DM at the wheel and me with a camera on my knee, it was whipped up, switched on and I got this. OK, so most of the cows that had been on the road had already exited on the other side, these two were just starting to cross when confronted by cars in both directions. The lead one froze, part way across. It’d certainly forgotten its green cross code. Both cars stopped and waited, and waited some more but the cow was rooted to the spot. Eventually, we gingerly set off and passed it by.

DM then came out with a complete corker. “I’m getting very worried about tornadoes.” “Why?” I asked. “Well”, he said “I was watching a programme about tornadoes the other day and one of the people they interviewed said there are always cows in the middle of tornadoes. There are so many cows on the moor at the moment there must be lots of tornadoes on the way.” Hmmmmmmm.

Please note the absence of anything beyond 100 yards!

Well, she did the stop part, is definitely looking, and perhaps listening. All she needs to do now is cross.
And DM probably needs a lie down.

I think you'll be ok, I've never seen a Ford Mondeo in a tornado
