Photographed in my garden last summer, on Coreopsis plants. I was reasonably sure this was a Calligrapha californica, but as it looked somewhat different from others I'd seen, I needed to get expert help. Thanks to Bug Guide I now know it is a subspecies of Calligrapha californica, found almost entirely on coreopsis. I'll have to watch for them again this summer and try for a better photo. Most calligraphic beetles are spectacularly patterned beetles, but this one is a bit more mundane in comparison. If you wish to see others in this family, you could check out the rest of this gallery.
