Tortoise beetle (Charidotella purpurata)

When I found this tortoise beetle, it was a new species for me though I didn't know for sure at the time, as it looked very similar to another species. However, the good folk at Bug Guide have confirmed that this is Charidotella purpurata. It seems to be far more scarce than the more common golden tortoise beetle or other of the various tortoise beetles we get around here.

Incredible detail in this excellent closeup. It even looks pretty for a beetle ;-). V.
