Eastern Box elder bug, left, and milkweed bug, right (Boisea trivittata, and Lygaeus kalmii)

There was a large concentration of box elder bugs, both adults as here, and nymphs in various stages, under a large Manitoba maple (also called box elder). The occasional small milkweed bug could be seen, probably having wandered over from the nearby big stand of common milkweed! Although they look very similar, the box elder bug belongs to the Scentless Plant Bugs (Rhopalidae), while the milkweed bug belongs to the Seed Bugs (Lygaeidae).

These invaded my workplace last fall so I have seen these bugs. Not quite this close though. Super detail and they look a lot prettier up close. V.

My goodness, so similar. Must be another example of mimicry in nature.

Hmmm. I would think they are related by the looks. Excellent closeup. V
